Level I
Music Theory
Application of the basics and fundamentals of harmony,
including temperament, tonality, notation and scales, focusing on the construction of melodies and
improvised lines. Discussion on the methods for practicing and writing these lines as well.
Chords
Study and application of standard chord progressions, harmonizing scales and understanding
substitutions.
Scales
Covers example solos by prominent musicians of the Contemporary genre used to
demonstrate the application of scales and arpeggios.
Styles
Focusing on the early and contemporary styles of guitar. Solos and songs will be
learned and analyzed from artists such as Pass, Reinhart, King, Hooker, Guy, Hendrix, Clapton,
Santana, Howe, Morse, Vai, Van Halen, and Deleo.
Ear and Sight Training
Emphasis is placed on
common chord progressions, syncopated rhythms, reading first and second positions on the neck,
and chord charts.
History
Study of all known ideas and concepts to the Middle Ages, Renaissance,
Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary genres.
Performance
Bi-Weekly class held for students to interact in a live setting performing song
lessons given in Styles.
Lab
This course is an independent study in which the students are provided the use of our
computer laboratory for audio and video lessons to enhance their training learned in class.
